5 reasons why traditional guitar lessons fail 90% of kids

There are a lot of problems with how kids are traditionally taught guitar:

  • Uninspiring and dry teaching methods that don't capture your child's attention.
  • Too short guided practice time, since a weekly 45-minute lesson just isn't enough.
  • Practicing at home becomes a struggle for you both.
  • Expensive in-person lessons that don't always fit into your budget.
  • Time constraints of private teachers clash with your family schedules.

There's a better way to learn.

Guitar Playground™ was created by a father-son team who experienced these challenges firsthand. We combined 25 years of guitar teaching expertise with a child's perspective to develop an online learning system that actually works for kids

Tom Fontana has taught guitar for 25+ years, helping over 200,000 students learn through TheGuitarLesson.com since 2008. But it wasn't until teaching his son Milan that he truly understood the unique challenges of teaching kids.

When Milan turned 9, he was ready to start learning guitar...
But Tom quickly discovered that his proven adult teaching methods needed to evolve to be engaging enough for kids nowadays.

It was actually incredible watching my daughter do the sample lesson. She smiled non stop, learned the notes, played it with you, and insisted she would teach me as well 🙂 A day later, she asked about the next lesson.

We tried private lessons but they never stuck since he didn't practice at home. Guitar playground is so different, Benny loves earning badges and can't wait to show us his new songs.

My son took private lessons for 6 months, we paid over $1000 in total for them, but it feels like he got more from your course in 1 month. He never used to practice on his own, but he looks forward to getting your email and the new lesson every other day, I think that's what keeps things going.

The way you break down songs makes it so easy for Ethan to follow. I realize that they are just parts of the songs, but he's enjoying it a lot and I can really hear that he's getting better. Hope it sticks.

Frequent questions about our lessons

Parents often ask us how our online guitar lessons work, what age is best to start, and what equipment their child needs.

Here are the answers to the most frequently asked questions about getting started with Guitar Playground.

Guitar Playground combines 25+ years of guitar teaching experience, personal interaction with kids, and the advice of 2 child psychologists to give you:

  • a structured curriculum of high-quality video lessons hosted by Milan and Tom,
  • 4 video lessons per week,
  • skills are taught through learning songs kids love,
  • gamified interactive elements (points, guitar bucks, badges, levels, real gifts in the mail),
  • personalized feedback,
  • parental help.

This modern, multi-faceted approach to learning has proven effective and engaging for kids.

Guitar Playground is better than visiting a private teacher 1x per week, since children get much more regular practice through our system.

Guitar Playground is designed for school-aged children 8-14.

It is at age 8 that kids usually have:

  • the fine motor skills needed to handle a guitar,
  • their attention span is good enough to focus for 20-30 minutes,
  • and they start having musical ambitions.

I've had a lot of questions about this topic, with many parents wanting to teach kids aged 6. Their reasoning is that kids learn singing and music in kindergarten already, so why not? Teaching singing to children younger than 8 is OK, but that is different.

With guitar, I've found that a more "mature" child is needed. 8 is generally best, a few can start as young as 7.

I recommend 20-30 minutes of practice per day, but at least every other day.

Your child will get 4 video lessons a week, which are short and rewarding.

Our lesson curriculum is designed to incorporate the revision and practice of material we learned, not just new elements in each lesson. This is means that even if a child doesn't practice much on their own, they still do together with us in our lessons.

And with all that said, most kids look forward to receiving their new daily videos, earning their badges, and learning new songs, so it's easy to get them playing.

The course is self-paced. If life gets busy, you can adjust the schedule to fit your needs. The important thing is consistent practice, not speed.

As I mentioned, aim to practice at least every other day.

Absolutely! Our course includes detailed instructions and tips for parents. Even if you've never played an instrument, you'll find the guidance you need to effectively support your child's learning journey.

And if you feel like it, start learning guitar with your child at the same time through our lessons.

It provides the perfect bonding opportunity, and you get to learn guitar as well!
